ME 3500 — Materials Selection for Mechanical Engineers

4 semester hoursUndergraduateLecture

Covers systematic strategies for selecting materials for mechanical designs considering properties, shape, and other design requirements. Examines how to choose materials when there are multiple constraints and conflicting objectives and how to use materials indices for material selection. A term project requires students to choose a project of interest, select materials for it, and present the rationale for their selections to the class. Introduces industrially relevant materials selection software as a tool for systematic materials selection in various case studies.
