Presents foundational concepts relevant to rural health in the United States. Covers key definitions, frameworks, and epidemiologic trends in rural health in the United States. Introduces themes of asset- (vs. deficit-) based and responsible community engagement, cultural humility, and empathy in relation to rural communities and their application through experiential learning opportunities. Highlights innovative approaches to addressing rural health inequities and challenges and evidence-based resources for advancing understanding of challenges in rural health. Draws on examples and cases to illustrate and encourage the application of didactic content to real-world problems.
