Explores the rich cultural histories of the Bay Area through the lens of creative writing. Analyzes literary forms and techniques in classic and contemporary works that illuminate themes of place, community, and personal and cultural histories. Explores and practices techniques and craft devices such as narrative, place as character, the epistolary form, ekphrastic poetry, the instructive language of recipes, and revision as a generative process. Engages with the diverse and dynamic arts, cultural offerings, and communities of the Bay Area as students apply these experiences to the creation of their own place-based literary works. Utilizes the workshop model to encourage experimentation and build skills in critique and revision.
