Discusses clean water sustainability, legal and historical regulations, ethics, and chemical engineering. Examines requirements and approaches to achieving clean water through a historical lens, considering the road to local government and institutional regulations. Emphasizes history leading to establishing the Clean Water Act and its impact and compares legal and societal standards in other locations. Addresses case studies including Charles River, Cuyahoga River, and Love Canal, and addresses current challenges including PFAS and desalinated water supplies. Discusses chemical engineering approaches enabling clean water (filtration, reverse osmosis, fluid mechanics), including how associated regulations are established. Includes design, build, and analysis of pilot-scale water treatment systems. Serves as an overall introduction to chemical engineering concepts grounded in societal needs and government and industrial standards.
