Introduces the key roles that physical forces, the extracellular matrix, and cytoskeletal structure play in the development of human diseases. Views the cell as an engineering system that is capable of sensing physical cues from its environment, integrating such information from different mechano-sensors, and responding to changes in its external environment in a coherent manner. Uses mathematical and computational models to explain how cells sense and respond to physical cues.
