Links paper, widely used in packaging, to work done by designers in systems of production, consumption, waste, and natural ecologies. Examines the ethical, social, and environmental responsibilities in the design of mass-produced objects and the role of paper in sustainability initiatives as a substitute for plastics. Uses design methods for material exploration, prototyping, and evaluation to deliver rich experiences. Offers students an opportunity to learn how to assess the impact of design decisions by following design through the stages of a packaging system: manufacturing, storage, merchandising, use, and product end-of-life.
