Analyzes new developments and current trends in advanced practice, education, and research. Includes the historical, legal, legislative, and professional role issues associated with advanced practice specialty nursing. Emphasizes professional responsibilities, ethical issues, diversity, cultural competency, quality assurance, continuing education, and professional involvement. Focuses on the historical events that have impacted the development of both the profession and the organizational structure of the professional organizations: American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, American Nurses Association, and the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Discusses professional standards established by these organizations. Reviews other agencies, at the federal and state levels, that affect the legal recognition of advanced practice. Presents an overview of the educational accreditation process and certification.
