Addresses the development of nursing science with specific emphasis on the importance of developing theory-based research. Includes a broad review of the various types of research studies (e.g., descriptive, causal, and relational); the steps of the research process; and the related analytic strategies and/or issues associated with each type of research study. Reviews the guidelines for conducting critical literature reviews (i.e., systematic or meta-analyses) and how the results are used to determine the type of research study to employ. Discusses the scientific principles and integrity related to the conduct of responsible research and the means for assuring ethical integrity of research on human subjects.
