NNMD 5580 — Nanodrug Delivery Systems: Design, Visualization, and Modeling

Examines nanoscale drug delivery systems through an integrated focus on design principles, molecular visualization, and structural modeling. Explores the physiological barriers that restrict nanoparticle transport across major administration routes and the nanomaterial design strategies developed to overcome them. Emphasizes how nanomaterial properties, functionalization approaches, and structure–activity relationships inform the design of strategies optimized for drug targeting, penetration, and retention. Highlights advances in RNA therapeutics, tissue-engineered constructs, biomimetic delivery systems, and theranostics, supported by hands-on application of computational tools for visualizing nanomaterials, analyzing structure–function relationships, and modeling delivery behavior. Offers students an opportunity to reverse engineer and redesign an existing nanodrug delivery system using data-driven design and modeling to enhance its performance across a different physiological barrier.
