Examines the continuing themes of the nature of the American dream, the desire to create a distinctly American literature, and continues through the artistic and literary movement known as modernism. Surveys the major American writers and major literary works through these eras. May include works by such writers as Whitman, Dickinson, Twain, James, Hemingway, Moore, Faulkner, Ellison, Cahan, and Morrison, as well as other literature by historically marginalized and underrepresented voices.
