Offers an advanced study of jazz as an American dance form in a five-day-a-week studio-based course. Aims to improve and expand upon previous and concurrent dance training by focusing on multiple aspects of jazz dance, including concert dance, choreography, improvisation, and social/vernacular techniques. Explores traditional, improvisational, and contemporary ideas of jazz dance. Students analyze and recreate choreographic phrases incorporating stylistic differences appropriate to jazz's diverse ideologies. Gives students the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of jazz dance's defining characteristics and aesthetic qualities and an appreciation for its roots, history, and continuity. Through performance and portfolio processes, students explore their own expressive and creative possibilities while making connections to the concert jazz dance form. May be repeated twice.
