ARTG 6810 — Advanced Design and Disability: Investigating Normal

Assembles critical perspectives from advanced disability studies with design across scales—assistive technology, inclusive and adaptive design, and critical and speculative designs from disability-led cultural production. Advanced subjects include tech and design for mobility and wayfinding in the built environment, sensory capacity, aging and end of life, and cognition and neurodiversity. Emphasizes readings in theoretical and historical scholarship, together with analysis of artifacts and material culture, comparing and contrasting design’s many symbolic and functional registers. Taught as a seminar augmented by lightweight design experiments.
