Builds upon basic typographic skills and knowledge to extend, expand, and deepen the student’s understanding of the full range of possibilities for typographic expression as text, image, and experience of a reader. Challenges students to engage with letterform across historical and cultural practices of writing in a wide range of media. Examines how to identify the derivation and significance of writing styles by analyzing typographic form, composition, and presentation to the reader in a variety of contexts. Requires students to experiment with alphabets, fonts, and letterform as systems of signs with semiotic, semantic, logical, grammatical, and syntactical possibilities. Employs conceptual thinking, observation, analysis, and synthesis to devise and implement original ideas in various media.
