Explores different cultural and technical aspects of African filmic productions throughout history. Examines films by classic African directors in addition to films by contemporary directors from Africa and the African diaspora. Engages with theories such as postcolonialism and African feminism. Considers issues of genres such as documentary and short film. Investigates key themes such as class, ethnicity, sexuality, and religion. Offers students an opportunity to become familiar with filmic representations of Africa by Africans and African filmmaking practices.
